JazzTimes ha acclamato il suo modo di suonare non accompagnato come "una forma d'arte completa, autosufficiente, univocamente pura", mentre All About Jazz ha osservato che "quando si parla di arte del piano solo in jazz, ci sono due classi di artisti: Fred Hersch e tutti gli altri."
